There were 562,900 overnight stays in hotels in July 2024, which is a 5,3% decrease from the previous year (594,600). There was a 5,7% increase in the North region. All other regions saw a decrease, particularly in the East (-19.2%) and West and Westfjord regions (-16.6%). Moreover, there was a 5,0% decrease in the Capital region.

Foreign overnight stays in hotels were 449,100, or 80% of overnight stays, while domestic overnight stays were 113,800 (20%). Foreign overnight stays decreased by 8,4% while domestic overnight stays increased by 9,1%.

The supply of hotel bedrooms increased by 1.7% from July 2023, while the occupancy rate for hotel rooms decreased by 5.9 percentage points. There was a decrease in occupancy rates in all regions except in the North. The sharpest decrease was in the East (-13.6) and the West and the Westfjords (-12.2).

All accommodations
In July 2024, there were 1,506,000 registered overnight stays in Iceland, which is a 2.6% decrease from July 2023 (1,547,000).

Foreign overnight stays were 71% of overnight stays, or 1,071,000, which is a 6.6% decrease from July 2023 (1,146,000). Domestic overnight stays were 436,000, which is an 8.5% increase from the previous year (401,000). Overnight stays in hotels and guesthouses were 771,000 while 735,000 were in other types of accommodation (camping sites, cottages etc.).

In July, there were 150,000 estimated overnight stays through Airbnb, 20,000 with friends and relatives and 10,000 in camper vans outside of registered campsites.

All numbers for 2024 are preliminary, except for hotel data which is preliminary for July 2024.
