There were 479,500 overnight stays in hotels in June 2024, which is a 6% decrease from the previous year (510,000). There was a 1% increase in the Capital region. In all other regions there was a decrease, particularly in the East (-27%) and Southwest regions (-17%).
Foreign overnight stays in hotels were 381,900, or 80% of overnight stays, while domestic overnight stays were 97,600 (20%). Foreign overnight stays decreased by 8% while domestic overnight stays increased by 5%.
The supply of hotel bedrooms increased by 1.3% from June 2023, while the occupancy rate for hotel rooms decreased by 6.0 percentage points. There was a decrease in occupancy rates in all regions except in the North. The biggest change was in the East (-20.6) and the West and the Westfjords (-10.1).
All accommodations
In June 2024, there were 1,099,800 registered overnight stays in Iceland, which is similar to June 2023 (1,099,800).
Foreign overnight stays were 77% of overnight stays, or 846,100, which is an 1% decrease from June 2023 (858,400). Domestic overnight stays were 253,700, a 5% increase from the previous year (241,500). Overnight stays in hotels and guesthouses were 655,500 while 444,300 were in other types of accommodation (apartments, cottages etc.).
In June, there were 130,000 estimated overnight stays through Airbnb, 13,000 with friends and relatives, and 4,000 in camper vans outside of registered campsites.
All numbers for 2024 are preliminary, except for hotel data which is preliminary for June 2024.
