In May 2024, there were 611,000 registered overnight stays in Iceland, which is a 15% decrease from May 2023 (720,000). Overnight stays at hotels were 385,800, which is a 7.1% decrease from May last year.
Foreign overnight stays were 78% of overnight stays, or 478,000, which is an 18% decrease from May 2023 (584,000). Domestic overnight stays were 134,000, which is a slight decrease from the previous year (135,000). Overnight stays in hotels and guesthouses were 481,000 while 130,000 were in other types of accommodation (apartments, cottages etc.).
There were 385,800 overnight stays in hotels in May, which is a 7.1% decrease from the previous year (415,100). There was a decrease in overnight stays in all regions, particularly in the East (-24%) and Southwest regions (-18%). Overnight stays in the Capital region saw a decrease of 5.2% from May last year.
Foreign overnight stays at hotels were 304,800, or 79% of overnight stays, while domestic overnight stays were 80,900 (21%). Foreign overnight stays decreased by 9.2% from last year, while domestic overnight stays increased by 2.0%.
The supply of hotel bedrooms increased by 2.7% from May 2023, while the occupancy rate for hotel rooms decreased by 6.9 percentage points. There was a decrease in occupancy rates in all regions, particularly in the East (-14.3) and South regions (-9.5).
In May, there were 92,000 estimated overnight stays through Airbnb, 14,000 with friends and relatives, and 4,000 in camper vans outside of registered campsites.
All numbers for 2024 are preliminary, except for hotel data which is preliminary for May 2024.
