So far this year overnight stays are 7,144,400 and have never been greater. This is a 2% increase from 2018 when they were 6,990,300.

In September 2022, there were 853,500 overnight stays in Iceland which is a 27% increase between years. Foreign overnight stays were 81% thereof, or 853,500, which is a 37% increase from the previous year (503,700). Domestic overnight stays were 161,000 which is a 4% decrease from the previous year. Overnight stays in hotels and guesthouses were 647,300, thereof 494,100 in hotels while 206,200 were in other types of accommodation (apartments, cottages, campsites etc.).

There were 494,100 overnight stays in hotels in September, characterised by an increase in all regions from September 2021. Foreign overnight stays at hotels were 400,900 or 81% of overnight stays at hotels while the Icelandic overnights were 93,200 (19%). Foreign overnight stays increased by 49% between years while the Icelandic decreased by 1%.

In the 12-month period from October 2021 to September 2022, the number of overnight stays in hotels was 4,374,700, which is almost a triple increase from the prior 12-month period. There was a marked increase in all regions.

The number of hotel bedrooms increased by 8% in September 2022 compared with September the year before. Occupancy rate for hotel rooms was 78.7%, which is an increase of 15.2 percentage points from September 2021.

All numbers for 2022 are preliminary, except for hotel data which is preliminary for September 2022. Due to abrupt changes in supply and occupancy rates, estimation for other types of accommodation than hotels is currently subject to a higher degree of uncertainty than usual and should therefore be taken with a special precaution until final numbers are available.
