VAT turnover, excluding passenger flights, has remained the same in the period from July to August this year compared with the same period last year. During this period VAT turnover from passenger flight has decreased by 25%, from 45 billion ISK in 2018 to 36 billion ISK in 2019.
VAT turnover in tourism related sectors with and without passenger flights
Employees in tourism related sectors are 8% fewer this September than September last year. Employees in passenger flights and related operations decreased by 21% between years, employees in catering and services by 8% and employees in other tourism sectors by 9%.
The average number of employees in tourism related sectors in April – September was 28,450 compared with 30,700 the same period last year, a 7% decrease. Employees in passenger flights and related operations decreased by 19% during this period while employees in all other tourism related sectors combined decreased by 5%.
Overnight stays in September were 1,060 thousand and decreased by 4% compared with the same month last year when they were 1,100 thousand. Overnight stays decreased in all types of accommodation between years. Unlisted accommodation, such as Airbnb and overnight stays in cars, decreased by 7% during this period while listed accommodation decreased by 3%.
This release includes new data, i.e. turnover from non-Icelandic credit cards used in Iceland. This information helps to reflect tourist spending in Iceland. In addition, this release includes updated statistics on overnight stays, tourists through Keflavik airport and VAT turnover and employees in tourism related industries. Also released are updated statistics on rental cars from the Iceland transport authority, road traffic statistics from Icelandic Road Administration and a count from the Icelandic Tourist board on passengers departing Iceland.
