Turnover according to VAT reports in Icelandic tourism sectors just over 87.2 billion ISK in March to April, an increase of almost 166% from the previous year.
Register based employment in the tourism industries in Iceland was 24,271 in March 2022, an increase of 61% compared with March 2021. In the 12-month period from April 2021 to March 2022, an average of 22,803 people worked in the tourism industry compared with 17,425 in the previous 12-month period.
Estimated overnight stays in hotels in May are 255,000 compared with 102,824 in May 2021. The number of overnight stays by Icelanders were 54,000 (-17%) and the number of overnight stays by foreign guests were 201,000 (+429%).
In May, there were 177,014 departures of passengers from Keflavik airport compared with 18,774 in May 2021. Departures of passengers with foreign citizenship were 112,032 compared with 14,395 in May 2021.
This release includes updated statistics on overnight stays, turnover by VAT reports and register based employment. Also updated are statistics on rental cars from the Icelandic Transport Authority, traffic statistics from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, passengers count by nationality from the Icelandic Tourist Board and passengers’ statistics through Keflavik Airport along with traffic statistics published by ISAVIA.
