NEWS RELEASE TOURISM 26 OCTOBER 2022

Turnover according to VAT reports in Icelandic tourism sectors just over 196 billion ISK in July y to August this year, an increase of almost 78% from the previous year.

Overnight stays in hotels in August were approximately 598,000 compared with 439,182 in August 2021. The number of overnight stays by Icelanders were 105,459 (-12%) and the number of overnight stays by foreign guests were 492,335 (+54%).

Register based employment in the tourism industries in Iceland was 32,795 in August 2022, an increase of 27% compared with August 2021. In the 12-month period from September 2021 to August 2022, an average of 26,748 individuals worked in the tourism industry compared with 17,882 in the previous 12-month period.

In September, there were 237,270 departures of passengers from Keflavik airport compared with 137,180 in September 2021. Departures of passengers with foreign citizenship were 176,988 compared with 108,276 in September 2021.

This release includes updated statistics on turnover by VAT reports, overnight stays and register based employment. Also updated are statistics on rental cars from the Icelandic Transport Authority, traffic statistics from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, passengers count by nationality from the Icelandic Tourist Board and passengers’ statistics through Keflavik Airport along with traffic statistics published by ISAVIA.
