The total number of overnight stays was 6.5 million in the year 2015, which is a 19% increase compared with the year 2014. Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 86% of the total number of overnight stays in 2015 and increased by 27% compared with previous year. At the same time overnight stays of Icelanders decreased by 14%. From 2014 to 2015 the number of overnight stays increased in all types of accommodation establishments.
Recent years have seen a great increase in the number of overnight stays. With an increase of 3.3 million since 2011, total overnight stays have more than doubled during the period. During the same period, overnight stays of foreign tourists have increased by 129.3%, while overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 15.6%. Most overnight stays in 2015 were spent by tourists from Britain, USA, and Germany.
