Statistics Iceland has published the results of its second Travel Survey. Result show that over the period from May 2007 to April 2008, the total number of trips that were taken by residents of Iceland aged 16 to 74 amounted to 1.2 million trips within the country, and approximately 400 thousand trips overseas. However, the total number of nights spent on trips abroad was similar to the total number of nights spent on domestic trips, as the average number of nights per trip was 9 nights in the case of outbound trips and 3 nights in the case of domestic trips.
The most common destination in domestic trips was the South and the West region of Iceland, and the most common types of accommodation were ‘holiday houses’ or ‘the homes of friends and relatives’. Spain, The United Kingdom and Denmark were the most popular destinations in outbound trips, and in the vast majority of cases the accommodation was hotels or guesthouses. The majority of domestic trips were holiday and recreational, or 86% of the total. For outbound trips, roughly 72% were holiday and recreational trips, while 26% were busi¬ness trips. The study showed that individuals from households with higher income were more prone to travel than others, and women generally travelled more often than men. However, men went on more business trips than women.
