All statistics published by Statistics Iceland are considered open data.

All published content on the Statistics Iceland website may be reused, copied, and shared in any format or medium for any purpose as long as Statistics Iceland is credited as the author in accordance with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license.

Good guidelines for the use and citation of sources can be found fx. at the University of Iceland Center of Writing.

The license does not apply to stock photos published on the website as they are the property of third parties.

If statistics from Statistics Iceland are altered in any way, the institution should not be credited as the source for the changes made to the data.


Statistical database

On the Statistics Iceland website, tables can be viewed with detailed data and time series, categorised by topic. The data is updated in connection with publications at 9 a.m. on the publication date. See the Advance release calendar for more details.

Statistics Iceland publishes all statistics in Statistical database using PX-Web software , developed by Statistics Sweden to disseminate statistical information. This software is also used by other Nordic statistical offices.

Instructions for using PX-Web software on Statistics Iceland's website are only available in Icelandic.


Open data via API

All published statistics from Statistics Iceland are accessible via API, where data can be retrieved directly.

Note that data obtained via API includes more detailed metadata than data retrieved via PX-Web queries.

The API can be used without registration. Guidelines for the API are available in English from Statistics Sweden, which uses the same system.

Both the R and Python statistical programs can be used to retrieve data directly via API.
