In October 2004 there were 7,379 staff members in compulsory schools in Iceland. The number of personnel has decreased by 93 since October 2003, the number of full-time equivalents has decreased by 42 and the number of pupils has decreased by 290. In autumn 2004 over 85% of teachers had a teaching licence. The proportion of licensed teachers has never been greater since the start of the data collection by Statistics Iceland in 1997.
