From the year 2000 to 2005 the number of teachers has increased in pre-primary, compulsory and upper secondary schools in Iceland. A total of 10,800 teaching personnel worked in 10,100 full-time equivalent jobs in the autumn of 2005. The teaching profession on the whole is ageing and almost every other teacher at the upper secondary level is 50 years old and older. In 2005-2006 women are for the first time the majority of teachers at the upper secondary level.
