Local government elections took place on 27 May 2006. At that time the total number of municipalities was 79, reduced from 105 in the previous elections of 2002. The number of voters on the electoral roll of the 2006 elections was 216,163, corresponding to 71.3 per cent of the population. This is an increase of 11,218, or 5.5%, on the 2002 elections.
