The working paper provides a review of the regional classification of Statistics Iceland from 1920 to the present, as well as the municipal identifiers, used from the start of the national population register in 1952 to the present. Until the 1960s, Statistics Iceland divided the country into five regions; the Southwest region, the Westfjords, the North region, the East region and the South region.
