Total expenditure on education amounted to 232 billion ISK in 2020, corresponding to 7.9% of GDP. For comparison, total expenditure on education amounted to 66.3 billion ISK, at 2020 prices, in 1980 or 4.6% of GDP and 150 billion ISK in 1998 or 6.8% of GDP. The share of private expenditure on education has decreased slightly in the period 1998-2020, from 9.6% of total expenditure on education in 1998 compared with 8.4% in 2020. The share of public expenditure on education was, correspondingly, 91.6% in 2020, of which the share of local government was 65.2%, increasing from 1998 when local government’s share of public expenditure on education was 59.8%.
