Statistics Iceland has published the results of its ninth survey on the use of Information and Communications Technology in households and by individuals.

Results show that Internet connections are now in 93% of households in Iceland. The annual in-crease in the number of connected households has been 2% yearly average last five years. However the increase is lower between 2010 and 2011 than in the previous years.

More than 4% of the population in the age range of 16–74 years old have never connected to the Internet, but 93% connect to it daily. The use of social networks has increased from 70% of Internet users in 2010 to 76% now. More than 40% have read or posted opinions on civic or political issues via websites, and more than one third of Internet users have taken part in on-line consultation to voting to redefine civic issues. More than half of Internet users in the age range of 16–74 years old had made purchases over the Internet, based on a reference period of one year prior to survey. Most commonly people had purchased telecommunication services, tickets to events, and travel arrangements, such as transportation tickets.

A third of those who have used a computer have updated or installed a new operating system on their machines. Approximately 62% consider their computer and Internet skills sufficient if they were to look for a new job or change jobs within a year. More than 57% consider their computer and Internet skills sufficient to protect their computer from viruses and other computer threats.
